10 July 2009
George Alexander Eugene Douglas Haig, 2nd Earl Haig OBE RSA DL (15 March 1918 – 10 July 2009)
The Royal British Legion was saddened today to learn of the death of Earl Haig at the age of 91. The son of British World War I commander Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of The Royal British Legion, The 2nd Earl Haig like his father before him, served the organisation north and south of the border and supported it consistently throughout his life.
Earl and Countess Haig were presented to the HM The Queen at the opening of Haig House, The Royal British Legion's new Headquarters which bears his family's name in Borough High Street, London, as recently as the 27th of February this year.
Peter Cleminson, National Chairman of The Royal British Legion said, "This is a great loss for the Legion and the country. My deepest sympathies go out to his family at this sad time."
Following wartime service during which he was captured and imprisoned at Colditz, Earl Haig became a tireless supporter of numerous Service and ex-Service charities including the The Royal British Legion Scotland, the Earl Haig Fund Scotland, the Lady Haig's Poppy Factory and the Scottish National Institution for War Blinded.
