The Royal British Legion wants 90 of you

28 September 2011

David Bell and Paul McClintock who will be taking part in the ChallengeArmed Forces charity The Royal British Legion is seeking 90 people to take part in a ten-mile Veteran's Challenge to mark its 90th anniversary and kick start the 2011 Poppy Appeal.

The North-East branch of the Legion is looking for people to run, cycle or wheelchair the ten-mile route around Newcastle and Gateshead on behalf of a veteran, for its 90 for 90 Veteran's Challenge on Saturday October 29.

The Legion's North-East secretary David Bell is organising the event. He said: "We're looking for 90 or more people to take part in the Challenge to represent 90 years of the Legion's work to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of our Armed Forces family - including our current Afghan generation.

"We've got some amazing veterans who have signed up to take part in the Challenge as their way of giving something back to the Legion and their comrades.

"We are also calling for supporters of our Armed Forces to come forward and rise to the Challenge on behalf of a veteran. You don't have to be super fit, just willing to take part and raise £100 each."

Funds from the 90 for 90 Veteran's Challenge will go towards the Legion's overall target of raising £90 million in its 90th anniversary year.

The Legion has made a £50 million funding commitment to create and operate The Royal British Legion Battle Back Centre, a national centre of excellence for adaptive sports and adventurous training that will help wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel regain their fitness and return to duty, or reskill and make a successful transition to civilian life.

This commitment, the largest-ever in the Legion's history, will also fund the operating costs of four Personnel Recovery Centres in the UK and a recovery facility in Germany.

The whole recovery programme will help around 800 wounded, injured and long-term sick Service personnel each year between 2011 and 2021.

The 90 for 90 Veterans Challenge takes place on Saturday October 29 from the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
