Thank you to all our runners in the Flora London Marathon

20 April 2009

These are just some of the runners who supported The Royal British Legion in this year's Flora London Marathon on Sunday 26 April. The Legion congratulates them for their huge effort and thanks everyone who supported them.

Captain Nick Stone

Captain Nick Stone of the 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) based near Blackpool, who has served in Afghanistan and Bosnia, has a target of £1500 for running his first marathon.

Capt Stone said he picked the Legion as his charity as he had "witnessed first hand what can happen to soldiers fighting on the front line."

Anyone wanting to help Capt Stone reach his target can donate online at www.justgiving.com/nickstone
Liz Hussell

Liz Hussell’s originally planned to support her husband who wanted to run and raise money for the Legion. But W02 Hussell (who served with the 2 (training) Regiment Army Air Corps) was killed in a training accident in May 2008. In October the letter arrived saying that WO2 Hussell had been successful in his bid for a place.

Instead of cancelling it, Mrs Hussell contacted the organisers and for the first time, they allowed her to run instead. Mrs Hussell says she wants to run the gruelling course in memory of her husband and will be raising money for the Legion. Her friend Anna Cooper is also running and the two brave ladies trained together.

Anna Cooper's husband is in the Army and has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. "The Royal British Legion is a charity which means a great deal to me" she said. "Working at Lister House, where there's a hydrotherapy pool which helps those injured in conflict gain mobility, means I've been reminded daily how important the work of the charity is."

Mrs Cooper says she’s had support in the form of her husband James, who is serving with 9 Regt AAC at Dishforth Airfield and her friend Liz who is also running the marathon in memory of her husband Vince, who died in a helicopter accident in 2008.

Jon Parry

A former Royal Navy helicopter pilot has swapped his aviators for trainers to run for the Legion. Jonathan Parry, 43, who has lived in Camberley for the last 33 years is hoping to raise over £1300.

"I first became aware of the work of the Legion whilst I was serving in the Royal Navy and I am proud to be running in aid of such a great charity" he added. "With so many of our military personnel currently on active service around the world, the Legion's work in support of them and their dependants remains very relevant and important."

Trevor Tiller

A helicopter pilot from Stratford-upon-Avon is donning his running shoes to take part in his first London Marathon. Trevor Tiller, who works for the West Midlands Police Air Support Unit aims to raise over £1300. Mr Tiller a long-time member of the Legion said he wanted to highlight the work of the charity.

"My service life didn't seem to allow for the training and time required to do the marathon, but after 23 years with the Army Air Corps flying Gazelle and Lynx helicopters, I can finally give it a go. I still have many friends in the Forces and we are all aware that there may come a time when we need to call upon the Legion for assistance, particularly with two conflicts still ongoing."
