PoppyWalk 2009

16 June 2009

Walkers raising funds for The Royal British Legion will take part in a 10 km walk on Sunday 12th July in London. The PoppyWalk will take in some of London's greatest landmarks and raise funds for the Armed Forces.

Competitors will have just over 5 hours to seek out clues along the walk, testing their local knowledge in order to win prizes. "Whether you enter as an individual or a team, this is a fun and easy day out", said ex-Royal Marine Sean Power.

Local Londoner Sean, recently received financial help from the Legion after he was burgled just before Christmas last year. "I left the Forces to do a photo-journalism course at University after a photographer from The Times spent some time with my commando in Afghanistan. I was devastated when I came home one day to find all my equipment stolen. It was hard to complete coursework and do jobs without my camera. The Legion awarded me a grant to buy back the equipment that was stolen, so I'm back on my feet again now and can't thank the Legion enough."

Sean urges Londoners to get out and do their bit for The Royal British Legion and the Armed Forces saying: "With military operations continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan the Legion, like the forces, is really stretched, so it needs all the help it can get and the PoppyWalk is a brilliant way to do this. Londoners spend so much time on the Tube, you forget what a beautiful and interesting city London really is! The PoppyWalk is a great way for Londoners to see the city whilst doing there bit for a really worthwhile charity."
