Join our Big Bike Ride in Portsmouth
17 June 2010
The Royal British Legion is
calling on all cycling enthusiasts to join its Big Bike
Ride through Portsmouth on Sunday 27 June. The ride, run
in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, takes in all the city
sights and is FREE to join.
There are three different routes, starting and finishing at Castle Field, catering for everyone from experienced cyclists to those who may still have their stabilisers on.
Russell Thompson, The Legion's Director of National Events and Fundraising said, "The Big Bike Ride follows on from the success of the Round the Harbour Bike Ride, which we ran as part of last year's D-Day 65 celebrations.
"This year's Big Bike Ride coincides with Armed Forces Day on June 26 and there will be events taking place up and down the country during that weekend to mark the occasion. I would like to encourage anyone with a bike, or who can borrow a bike, to come along and join in the fun."
Participants can set off at anytime between 10.30am and 12.00pm and spectators are invited to attend at the start or line the route to cheer on the riders. 800 riders are expected to participate in the event.
There will also be a cycling festival at Castle Field featuring training sessions, free bike tune ups, free bike try-outs, a vintage cycle display and stunt demonstrations.
We are encouraging participants to raise sponsorship money for their ride and a fundraising pack will be sent out once online registration is complete. All those who raise £20 or more will receive a free t-shirt on the day and there will be a prize for the person who raises the most.
