The 10 mile run in Southsea, Portsmouth, takes place on October 25, which coincides with the National Launch for the Poppy Appeal.
David James said, "We are proud to be supporting our Servicemen and their families. This event is at the start of the two week Remembrance period and we hope as many people as possible will run for The Royal British Legion, which has been supporting our heroes for 88 years."
As an added incentive top on line retailer Subside Sports is donating ten poppy branded New England styled football shirts to those runners supporting the Poppy Appeal. Those who sign up for the Legion will be entered in to a draw for the shirts, which have been specially produced with two special badges, one depicting 'Serving Their Country - The British Forces and England national team' and a poppy.
The special England shirts can also be ordered on line and for every shirt ordered the company will donate £5 to the Legion. Please visit www.subsidesports.com.
Subside Sports Managing Director Jerry Smith, who is running on the day said: "Although significantly the run takes place during Remembrance tide it is a little known fact that the Legion needs to fund raise all year around to ensure it can meet the increasing requests for welfare support. Nationally the charity has seen a 30% increase in the number of under 35s needing help."
Royal British Legion Regional Fundraising Manager for the Midlands, Sue Smart said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the public to get behind our heroes by taking part."
"We are incredibly grateful to the players, Portsmouth Football Club and Subside Sports for their support."
This year crew members from Portsmouth based HMS Daring, Britain's brand new type 45 destroyer will also be taking part in the Great South Run. Alongside them will be Army runners, including a soldier working at Selly Oak Hospital, RAF, Royal Marines and Royal Navy Physical Training Instructors.
