'Time to do your bit' campaign scores major success
04 February 2010
The Legion's 'Time to do your bit' campaign, promoting its general election manifesto, has just received a major boost.
Firstly, almost 200 MPs met with the Legion's Public Affairs team on Tuesday 2 February and had their photos taken. The session was organised to thank them for pledging online to do their bit for the whole Armed Forces family. Almost 250 MPs have now pledged, including Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth and his Conservative and Liberal Democrat counterparts, Liam Fox and Nick Harvey.
Then, at Prime Minister's Questions the following day, responding to a question from Legion supporter, Robert Flello MP, Gordon Brown announced that he himself intends to pledge. The Prime Minister said, "I would be delighted to, and the Defence Secretary has already done so. I pay tribute to the outstanding work of The Royal British Legion and welcome its continued support to our Armed Forces and veterans."
Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron, is one of the other high profile MPs who has already pledged. After he met with a delegation from the Legion, he said, "I was delighted to pledge to do my bit… The Legion has an important role to play in highlighting the needs of the whole Armed Forces family, and they deserve our support."
After such a successful week, the Legion is hoping that the campaign will continue to gain momentum in the run up to this year's general election.
