Battle of Fromelles Commemoration Service

19 July 2010

The Battle of Fromelles on 19-20 July 1916, will be commemorated at the newly constructed Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Fromelles.

This will become an annual event. Royal British Legion standard bearers will be in attendance and dignitaries from Australia, the United Kingdom and France are expected to attend.

This is the first new cemetery built for World War I or II soldiers in 50 years. The bodies are those of the 250 Australian and British soldiers killed in the Battle of Fromelles and recovered from Pheasant Wood, where they were buried by German forces in six mass graves and excavated in 2008.

Tickets are now available for members of the public who wish to attend the dedication service. Full details are available on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website

Visit the Remembering Fromelles website for more information about the cemetery and process of identification.
