An act of Remembrance on the River Thames

11 November 2009

This year, for the first time, on November 11 there is to be an act of Remembrance on the river in Central London.

The Tower of London, the Company of Watermen and Lightermen, the Port of London Authority (PLA) and others have come together to take part in this event.

The M L Havengore, following her role at Sir Winston Churchill's State Funeral in January 1965 will be the centrepiece.

Escorted by boats from the various river services including the Fire Service, Metropolitan Police, PLA, RNLI and others, Havengore will cover a route starting next to Tower Bridge and passing many of London's major landmarks, ending her journey in the waters off the Houses of Parliament.

As Big Ben chimes 11.00am, the two minute silence will be observed followed by an act of Remembrance, culminating with the casting of wreaths onto the waters of the Thames.
